PACS® is prepared
by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in collaboration with certain other
members of the International Council on Scientific and Technical Information
(ICSTI) having an interest in physics and astronomy classification. The most
recent internationally agreed scheme was published by ICSTI in 1991. Revised
editions of PACS are published biennially, or as necessary, by AIP.
PACS is a hierarchical subject classification scheme designed to classify
and categorize the literature of physics and astronomy for journal subject
indexes, catalogs, computerized databases, and online journals. PACS enables
the indexes and databases from physics, astronomy and related fields to be
cumulated together and searched efficiently under a single coherent scheme,
and can be used either alone or in combination with keywords or free-language
text for retrieval.
Both "PACS" and "Physics and Astronomy Classification Scheme"
are registered trademarks owned by the American Institute of Physics.
AIP requests to the publishers to establish a link to the PACS home page so
that you will always be connected to the most current version of PACS.
What is PACS:
PACS contains 10 broad categories subdivided into 66 major topics, a detailed
acoustics appendix, and an alphabetical index with corresponding PACS codes.
This is illustrated in the summary of PACS. Each of the 66 topics is subdivided
into specific categories.
