Later on, individuals from different industrial entities such as household equipment manufacturers, automotive industry, manufacturers of acoustical materials, etc. joined the society. The Turkish Acoustical Society is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, composed of individual members. TAS has the following principal objectives:

- to provide the dissemination, exchange of scientific knowledge and new technology in all aspects of acoustics,
- to establish relationships between Turkish researchers,
- to organize congresses and seminaries on acoustics,
- to cooperate with other acoustical societies,
- to warn community and especially younger generations on the effects of noise and noise pollution,
- to assist the community and individuals who are seeking solutions to the environmental noise problem,
- to cooperate with governmental departments in order to promote the legislation about noise control.

The Society has published 10 issues of a bulletin, giving information about the Society activities, recent developments in acoustics, national and international meetings such as Congresses, Symposiums, etc., recent publications on acoustics and new member’s list. The Journal of The Turkish Acoustical Society “AKUSTIK” has begun to be published on June 2001. It is a four mounthly journal that covers scientific articles and news on acoustics.

The Society has organized five National Congresses on Acoustics, in 1994 at Bursa, 1995 at Antalya, 1997 at Istanbul and 1998 at Antalya. The 5th National Congress of Acoustics was held in Istanbul at 25-26 May 2000, joint with an International Symposium on “Noise Control and Acoustics for Educational Buildings, 24-25 May 2000”. The 6th National Congress on Acoustics of the Turkish Acoustical Society will be held on 26 – 28 October 2002 at Kas / Antalya, Turkey. Information can be found at “www.takder.org”

A training seminar on “ Acoustical Problems in the Environment, Buildings and Industry” was organized in 1994. Two training seminars on “Building Acoustics” and “Applied Modal Testing: Theory and Practice” (Prof. David. J. Ewans and Harry Zaveri) were organized in 1996. In addition, support was provided for the seminars “Low Noise Product Design”, “Muffler Design and Principles of Active Sound Control” and “Sound Quality and Machine Diagnostics” in 1996, “Product Sound Quality and Noise Labeling” and “Tools for Noise Control Engineers” in 1997, “Noise in the Future” (Dr. Per V. Brüel) and “Systematic Low Noise Design” in 1998. In 1997 an EAA Tutorium “Sound Quality” was organized.

“Noise Abatement” activities are being held related with 5th of June, World Environment Day, since 1997. This activity covers panels, seminaries and competitions such as poster competitions among students of art and architectural faculties and composition competitions among high-schools students.
