3. SOCIETY PROFILE
The Slovak
Acoustical Society (EAA Full Member) is a voluntary non-profit association
of institutions, scientists, technical acousticians, developing its activities
within the framework of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Founded in 1993 as
the Slovak successor of the Czechoslovak Acoustical Society, the Slovak Acoustical
Society keeps up the rich tradition of the acoustic research and technical
practice in Slovakia, and organizes the international acoustic conferences
well known by the European acoustic community.
The Technical Sections and managers are:

Noise and vibration / Stanislav Žiaran
Hygienical and legislative aspects of noise and vibrations / Felix Vanovcan

Two local
conferences are organized annually:
1. International Acoustic Conference NOISE AND VIBRATIONS IN PRACTICE, Kocovce
2. International Symposium Material-Acoustics-place, Zvolen
The International Acoustical Conferences - EAA SYMPOSIA "ACOUSTICS High Tatras" are being organized by the society with the 4 year periodicity; the following one will take place in the year 2006 (http://www.skas.sk/acoustics/2006).
The members of the Slovak Acoustical Society take part in the process of adoption of the international standards (e.g. Stanislav Žiaran, TSU Pieštany - Ivan Pobjecký et. al. and others). They help specify the maximum susceptible levels of noise and vibrations (Felix Vanovcan). Our members often take part in the international inter-laboratory comparison measurements of sound calibrators (Ján Šebok, Karol Richter) and acoustical inter-laboratory tests of noise generated by different sources (TSU Pieštany). Many of the members teach acoustics at universities. The research and development of the members of the Speech Acoustics group is mainly focused on speech synthesis and speech recognition.
