3. SOCIETY PROFILE

The OPAKFI was founded in 1933. The scientific society is a full member society of EAA, of IntemationallNCE and ICA.

OPAKFI is a non-profit organisation that covers severa I scientific fields. There are seven different sections:

- acoustics
- video technology
- micro technology
- photo and film technology - theatre technology
- optics
- noise and vibration control

The Association of Hungarian Acoustics is a member of OPAKFI, and has served for 60 years to unite active experts engaged in acoustics, noise control, and vibration technology in Hungary. The Acoustics Department deals with architectural acoustics, physiological and psychological acoustics, musical acoustics and other fields of acoustics. The Noise and Vibration Control Section is the group that deals with noise control engineering.

The aim of the two departments is to support the studies and research in the scientific field of acoustics. To take position to questions of noise control legislation.

The two sections are involved with the organisation of courses, seminars, and national and intemational conferences. Members of the organisation also participate in standards activities related to noise and vibration control, architectural acoustics and carry out research in various fields related to different field of acoustics. The medal Pro Silentio and Prize of Békésy are given periodically to the active specialists in the Society.

Every year The Noise and Vibration Control Section organise a national congress in different cities of Hungary to provide an opportunity for forming contacts and mutual exchange of ideas, reporting about latest research developments and technical advances.

Acousticians in Hungary have organised 25 intemational events in the last 25 years. The most-prominent meetings were:

- The 7th Intemational Congress on Acoustics (¡th ICA) which was sponsored by the Intemational Commission on Acoustics (lCA). This meeting was held in Budapest in 1971, and drew 1500 participants.

- Inter Noise 97, which was sponsored by I-INCE. The meeting was held in Budapest in 1997 with 800 participants.

- ACTIVE 97, which was sponsored by EAA. The meeting was held in Budapest in 1997 with 150 participants.

- ForumAcusticum2005, on behalf of the European Acoustics Association (EAA). The conference was held in Budapest with 600 participants.
